Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure, the Ford family was managed by her mom, grandmother as well as godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by word associations as a young toddler. Ford began performing in her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor for the school. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor would go on to have recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Apart from her regular theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy, which was added to her portfolio in 1996.
